WASHINGTON, D. C. — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to avoid the generic version of Viagra, known as Sildenafil Citrate, the active ingredient in the drug Revatio, as it may lead to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.
The Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to purchase or use Revatio, which is sold generically under the brand name Viagra. The FDA warns consumers not to take the drug if they are taking nitrates, guanylate cyclase stimulators like Adempas, or guanylate cyclase agonists like Riociguat. Riociguat may increase the risk of a heart attack, stroke, or blood clots.
“This is the latest in a string of regulatory actions that have led to the FDA advising consumers not to take the generic version of Revatio,” said Janet Woodcock, M. “The safety and efficacy of Revatio in individuals with PAH have not been established, and the use of Revatio for treating PAH is not recommended,” the FDA said in a statement.
The FDA is advising consumers to visit their healthcare provider for a blood pressure evaluation and consult with a health care professional before taking Revatio to assess its effects on blood pressure and to discuss the risks and benefits of the medication.
